Wilderness Leadership Training

Every year, The Eureka Institute's group of teens head out on the adventure of a lifetime through the Selkirk Mountains of North Idaho. This professionally guided trip can be a transformational experience  - a time for self discovery, confidence building and and gaining perspective. Ultimately, each participant will learn to establish deeper connections with others and with our natural environment.

Program Purpose

There is no doubt that the teen years can be challenging. At this juncture in life, kids have a real need to be self-sufficient, yet still require guidance and supervision. Here at the Eureka Institute, we have a passion for creating safe places that allow kids the space they need to explore their feelings, express ideas and build self-esteem. This week-long backpacking trip into the wilderness of North Idaho is led by qualified, experienced, and licensed guides. Our experts help participants develop interpersonal relationships, outdoor skills, environmental awareness, and a deeper understanding of the natural world. With our State of Idaho outfitters license, we have unprecedented and unique access to camping and hiking locations in the Chimney Rock and Roman Nose areas of our beautiful Selkirk Mountain Range.

The week's memorable expedition will take our teen backpackers along loop trails featuring high alpine lakes, meadows and breathtaking mountain peaks and views.  During this journey, teens will receive detailed instruction on packing and carrying their packs, storing and preparing food, creating a campsite and respecting the environment with the “leave no trace” method. In addition, teens will learn a multitude of skills:
  • Basic mountaineering
  • Orienteering
  • Cooperation
  • Leadership skills
  • Self-reliance
  • Geology
  • History
  • Ecology
  • Life skills
  • Self-sufficiency
  • Conservation
  • Teamwork
